When people need this
Avatars, team pages and slide templates all show people as circles, and every one of them crops your square upload for you — usually by cutting off the top of the head. Cropping here means you decide what stays inside the circle. Logos, stamps and product cut-outs use the same shape for a different reason: a round badge reads as a mark rather than as a photo.
How big the file gets
A circle covers about 78.5% of its bounding square, so the visible pixels drop by a fifth compared to cropping the same area square. PNG keeps the transparency and does not compress as hard as JPEG; a 512×512 avatar lands around 150–400 KB. Lower the fixed output size if you need a smaller avatar — sites rarely want more than 400×400.
Why transparency is the whole point
A circle saved on a white background is only round on a white page. Put it on a dark header and you get a white disc with a face in it. The output here has an alpha channel, so the circle sits on whatever colour the surrounding page uses. That is also why the format is locked to PNG — JPEG has no alpha, and saving a circle as JPEG is how you get a black box around a face.
